AQUATICS SUPERVISOR

Hourly / Non-Exempt

There is one (1) position available in the classification of Aquatics Supervisor for the City of Crescent City Recreation Department.  This is a full-time position with benefits. This is an open job recruitment.  Applications can be picked up at City Hall or online at www.crescentcity.org.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Director, the Supervisor will be responsible for supervising and coordinating programs to ensure that City facilities, activities and services are safe and effective to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction for public use.  Direct responsibilities include; planning, scheduling and directing the aquatic program operations, activities and services in a timely manner.  The Aquatics Supervisor may perform other related work duties as required and within the scope of this classification to assist in the furthering and advancement of City goals and objectives associated with Aquatics programming initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education and Experience

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent for completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Two years experience in the implementation and supervision of recreational/aquatics programming or pool management, operational procedures and administration inclusive of customer service and service delivery. Experience in competitive swimming, aquatic education, aquatic programming and marketing highly desirable.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide excellent customer service in a busy working environment.
  • The Aquatics Specialist is responsible for the pool’s operations during hours of use and will contact appropriate City personnel in the case of an emergency.
  • Perform supervisory duties including; instruction, work evaluation, policy and standard enforcement, activity coordination, hiring practices, employee relations including coaching and discipline.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of pool policies and regulations.
  • Train, schedule, supervise and evaluate incumbent staff; including coordination and conducting staff in-service training and seminars.
  • Provide lifeguard service and maintain order in the pool environment; inclusive of safety policy and procedures. Must be familiar with the duties of the Designated Head Lifeguard and the Water Safety Instructor, and must be able and willing to fill in if needed.
  • Customer services responsibilities such as: waiting on customers, and answer the telephone during programs when needed.
  • Oversee swimming lesson registration, and assign instructors to specific classes, and provide positive feedback and ideas for improvement to instructors.
  • Manages and provides oversight relative to cash handling and receipts for facilities and programs involved with the collection of fees.
  • The Aquatics Supervisor will oversee the monitoring of the pool’s chemistry, including specialty chemicals and is responsible for ensuring proper chemical ranges are maintained, and maintaining proper records of the pool’s chemistry.
  • The Aquatics Supervisor will assist the Recreation Director in preparation an annual budget for the pool.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and sanitation of the pool as well as the facility.
  • The Aquatics Supervisor will work with the Recreation Director to coordinate, develop, direct and implement aquatic programs and activities within the City as well as through partnerships with other public organizations.
  • Authorize all pool rentals, and ensure that any necessary insurance requirements are met.
  • May represent the City at meetings and department meetings and conferences.
  • Investigate and respond to calls, requests and complaints.
  • Conduct CPR and First Aid training.
  • Complete and maintain written reports concerning registration, Red Cross forms, Starfish Aquatics forms, press releases, swimming pool schedules, accident and incident reports and financial records.
  • Act as liaison for the City with support groups such as the Promote Our Pool Foundation to help facilitate fundraisers and special events that benefit the pool.
  • May serve on various City committees such as the Safety Committee and/or Wellness Committee.

KNOWLEDGE of:  Principles and practices of supervision, training and personnel management; Principles and techniques of life guarding, adult and child CPR methods and first aid, including rescuer methods as defined by the American Red Cross; Organizing competitive swimming, aquatic education, programming and marketing; Financial/payroll processing systems and facility scheduling software; Online registration systems and software; Aquatics and water safety programs; Federal, State and local laws relative to aquatics, personnel and safety; City practices, policy and regulations.

ABILITY to: Plan, market and promote programs; Work with frequent interruptions and changes in priority; Upgrade and maintain current certifications; Establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public; Must have the physical ability to swim 500 yards in 12 minutes or less; swim 50 yards in 45 seconds or less.

SKILLS: Oral and written communication in English; Experience with computers and related software applications; Multitasking, prioritizing, planning and organizing.

Wage and Benefits

Hourly Wage: $25.30 – $32.31

Retirement – PERS 2.5% @ 55 for classic members; 2% @ 62 for new (PEPRA) members.   Employee pays PERS member required contribution for either Classic or PEPRA.    

Health – The City provides 100% of the healthcare premium for the employee under the CalPERS Gold medical plan.  The City provides 80% of the cost of the 2-Party or Family premium for the CalPERS Gold medical plan that is over and above the cost of the Single premium.  The City will pay 100% of the employee premium costs for vision insurance, dental insurance, and air ambulance insurance.  Full-time regular employees who opt out of City’s health plan due to enrollment in a qualifying group health plan (under the Affordable Care Act) will receive a $700 per month cash-in-lieu benefit payment. 

Vacation Leave – Vacation is accrued at 4 hours biweekly upon employment and increases with time in service. There is an accumulation limit.

Sick Leave – Sick leave is accrued at 4 hours biweekly with an accumulation limit.

Holidays – 12 paid holidays per year.
