POLICE SERGEANT

($40.76 / Hr. - $49.55 / Hr.)

There is one (1) position available in the classification of Police Sergeant for the City of Crescent City Police Department. The start date for this position is October 1, 2026. This is a full-time position with benefits. This is an open job recruitment.  Applications can be picked up at City Hall or online at www.crescentcity.org.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, takes control of patrol, investigations and law enforcement operations on an assigned shift; personally performs all types of law enforcement duties and does related work as required. This position is supervised by the Chief of Police and exercises supervision over police officers and other assigned personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Including but not limited to: Supervises the complete law enforcement activities and operations during an assigned shift; Takes charge at the scene of emergencies or crimes and directs officers; Supervises and participates in the protection of crime scenes, the gathering of evidence and questioning of suspects; Gives officers direction in preparing written reports and cases for trial; reviews the work and written reports of officers; Prepares a variety of reports pertaining to crimes, accidents, or shift activity; Maintains discipline and ensures department rules and policies are followed; Conducts in-service training and evaluates the performance of officers; As necessary, responds to calls for service; Performs other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for this job position) Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education equivalent to a high school diploma is required; Associate’s degree in Police Science/Criminal Justice, Public Administration or Business Administration is preferred. Four (4) years of current full-time experience in law enforcement work comparable to that of a Police Officer in the City of Crescent City. Field Training Officer experience is preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE: Valid class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record; must maintain driver’s license in compliance with the City employee driving standards; Valid POST Intermediate Certificate; and completion of a POST Supervisor’s School within one year of appointment. Possession of a POST Supervisory Certificate is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE of: Modern law enforcement methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, basic investigations and identification techniques; recent court decisions and arrest procedures; principle of supervision and training; Community Policing principles.

SKILL to: Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Effectively communicate in the English language, both verbally and in writing;  Deal successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone; courteously respond to community issues, concerns and needs; make adjustments to standard operating procedures as is appropriate; work independently; understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Use sound judgment in following and applying appropriate laws, regulations, policies and procedures; interpret and apply policies, procedures and guidelines of the department to which assigned in a timely manner.

ABILITY to: Provide lead supervision to other law enforcement personnel; analyze situations effectively and interpret and apply laws and regulations; exercise good judgment in personal encounters and relationships with the general public; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, department employees, and the general public. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation with or without reasonable accommodation to enable the employee to observe and identify criminal activity, read and report license plates, and efficiently operate law enforcement equipment and firearms as required; sufficient clarity of hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to maintain two-way communications in person, on the telephone, and on the radio; sufficient clarity of speech or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner; Sufficient ability to compose a variety of comprehensive, logical, well organized and factual reports, records, correspondence, and related documents; sufficient ability to understand policy and procedures and comprehend and interpret laws and regulations and specific materials related to the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Employees must possess sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to operate law enforcement equipment and vehicles, render aid to the public, detain criminal suspects, and administer sobriety and other field tests as required; sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without  reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to safely lift, move, or maneuver whatever may be necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position; sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to move heavy objects, easily access tight spaces and confined areas, and sit for extended periods as required.

WAGE AND BENEFITS

Hourly Wage: $40.76 – $49.55

Retirement – PERS 2% @ 50 for classic members; 2.7% @ 57 for new (PEPRA) members.   Employee pays PERS member required contribution for either Classic or PEPRA.   

Health – The City provides 100% of the healthcare premium for the employee under the CalPERS Gold medical plan.  The City provides 80% of the cost of the 2-Party or Family premium for the CalPERS Gold medical plan that is over and above the cost of the Single premium.  The City will pay 100% of the employee premium costs for vision insurance, dental insurance, and air ambulance insurance.  Full-time regular employees who opt out of City’s health plan due to enrollment in a qualifying group health plan (under the Affordable Care Act) will receive a $300 per month cash-in-lieu benefit payment. 

Vacation Leave – Vacation is accrued at 4 hours biweekly upon employment and increases with time in service. There is an accumulation limit.

Sick Leave – Sick leave is accrued at 4 hours biweekly with an accumulation limit.

Holidays – 12 paid holidays per year.
